Birmingham City Council Makes Great Effort in Overcoming Flooding in Selly Oak

Residents across the Selly Oak town and the wider Birmingham area have suffered heavy rainfall from early on this year. There have been reports of severe flash flooding across the city and beyond. In some areas, residents attempted to block water to stop the flooding from reaching their cars.

The council have been making great efforts to reduce the severity of flooding across Birmingham by implementing a revised flood management strategy and improving its drainage system to reduce the damage caused by flooding in the city.

Serious Concern as Students Were ‘Crushed’ at Birmingham Students’ Union

A security guard working at the University of Birmingham's students union has said he is concerned students could be seriously harmed at the venue if more isn't done to keep students safe.

"We had lots of people crushed, we had someone have a rib injury, lots of people hyperventilating. I heard that someone had to be pulled out of the crowd just to get out of the situation," he told ITV News Central

He described it as "the event of the year", with lots of tickets sold, and noted that "it was very busy in the room", with lots of excited students there to see its headline act. "But then disaster broke out."

An “Existential” Housing “Crisis” Has Emerged at UK Universities, Leaving Students Struggling to Find Suitable Accommodation.

Exclusive data for Sky News, (by Higher Education platform StudentCrowd and accountants PwC,) shows that while the student population has risen by 400,000 since 2019, the number of available student houses has dropped by 19,000 in the same period. That's a loss of up to 95,000 bedrooms. Each house has multiple bedrooms.

Universities and private providers have only been able to make up less than a tenth of that, building an additional 9,000 bedrooms in purpose-built accommodation, in the last year. "What we're seeing right now is quite an existential crisis for students," said Chloe Field at the National Union of Students.
