University of Birmingham Develops a Test to Identify Sleep Deprivation.

A blood test that can accurately detect when someone has not slept for 24 hours has been developed at the University of Birmingham and Monash University.

The biomarker detected whether individuals had been awake for 24 hours with a 99.2% probability of being correct when compared to their well-rested sample.

With about 20 per cent of road accidents worldwide caused by sleep deprivation, researchers hope the discovery may inform future tests to quickly and simply identify sleep-deprived drivers. The biomarker could also be used for other situations where sleep deprivation may lead to catastrophic consequences, such as safety-critical workplaces.

What Are the Best Paying Jobs for Graduates in 2024?

The average (median) graduate salary in the UK is £35,170, according to an annual salary survey conducted by the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) in 2023. One sector it surveyed offers pay head and shoulders above that: the average graduate salary at law firms comes in at £47,000.

However, the ISE’s student recruitment survey comprises findings from its member employers, which are typically the largest employers with structured graduate programmes, and so might not be representative of salaries across the entire early careers market; in fact, just 131 organisations provided salary information.

£20M Funding Boost for Region’s Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Significant and much-needed financial support is to be provided to the region’s arts, cultural and heritage organisations thanks to £20 million of funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

In his Budget on Wednesday, 6 March, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced £10 million of new government money would be handed to the WMCA to continue the work it is doing to support organisations right across the West Midlands to enhance the positive role arts, culture and heritage can play in our daily lives.
